Thanks for the feedback.

I don't have much in the way of costume funds either so I usually go with what I can do using what I have.  The only problem I run into going that way is that most of the characters that I like either don't look like me physically (which isn't helped out by the fact that I can't see more that an arm's length away without glasses) or are so different from me personality-wise that I own next to nothing in my wardrobe that would even seem vaguely them-ish.

If I had the time I think I could make a pretty good costume out of some fabric scraps my mother and sister have, but my sewing skills are limited to hand sewing and that takes a long time to get even and sturdy stitches.

Elaborate on your answer below if you like.

I have a hard time finding characters that look like me that I also would like to use for a costume, so I started wondering what other people do.  Thanks!

Here's the image I've picked:

I can't wait to read your scenes!  I'll add mine at the end of the contest just before announcing the winner.
on: December 04, 2015, 11:02:01 AM 4 General / Show off your creations! / Story-Making Contest
Rules/What I'm Looking For:
1.  Tell me a story about this picture (you can tell me what happened to get to this, what is happening right now, what is about to happen--be creative)
2.  Try not to make it too long, one scene not an entire novel (according to a writing source I have one scene is about 1500 words, but if you can do it in fewer I'd like that too--it's not like I'm going to count especially if you've got something that feels complete)
3.  If you get going and want to do something longer, feel free to make a topic in storytelling.  I just ask that you include a link to your topic so I can read it, and if you want to post my picture in your story maybe put a note near it with my username.
4.  COPPAs, I think you can participate by posting a picture with a link to your gallery.  In that picture's description you could put your story.  (I don't know if there is a character cap in the descriptions.  If there is then feel free to include another image, just make sure to label which one is the first part in the image description or title.)
5.  Feel free to genre hop.  Even if the picture seems to be fantasy, steampunk, historical, etc. take it where you want it to go.  I like seeing different interpretations.  It's what makes these sort of things fun.
6.  All of the sites existing forum rules apply (so no excessive gore, romance, etc.)

This is the test run.  I may need to add/remove or modify the rules to make it more fun or to run more smoothly.

For the test run, the prize will be random.  Each post will be given a number and then I'll use a random number generator to pick a winner.  The prize will probably be a maker picture (character sheet, personalized weapon or costume, etc.) but I'm still open to suggestions on that.

Please post any prize or rule suggestions on this topic.

Contest runs from December 4th through 19th.
Winner will be announced by the 21st.

Extending deadline to the 31st so we'll have more than just mine.
I'll take any length or type of story, guys.  Please take a chance and submit one.
I was even thinking a poem could be cool.
Winner will be announced by the 3rd of January.

Okay, I think I'm going to try to start one in the show your own creations section.  I'll still check back here though in case anyone wants to include an opinion.

I'm thinking about making a contest, but, first, I'd like to know what people would prefer.  So please vote in the included poll.

I haven't decided if this would have prizes or just be for fun (a way to get the forum a little more alive again).  Please include a post if you have an opinion on whether there should be a prize and what types of prizes you'd be interested in--I'm thinking along the lines of a pencil sketch (which would probably be accessible through DeviantArt best), maker picture, character page, etc. but I'd like to hear what the people who might enter such a contest would like.

(Also, if a mod would like to include their opinion on whether a contest like this should go in Show Off Your Creations or Storytelling, I'd appreciate it.)

Thanks!

I'm actually really liking 12 even though I miss 11 (and 10 and 9...)  I feel like he and Clara actually have a better dynamic than 11 and Clara had.  Of course I've only seen through to Death in Heaven because our stations don't have Doctor Who and Netflix didn't have the Christmas episode up the last time I checked.

Good to have you back and welcome to the new mod. :)

I actually like a lot of different music.  Classic rock, old school rock/country, indie/alternative, musicals, funny musicals, grunge, ...I could keep going but the list is starting to get ridiculous.

Some favorites at this time are The Beatles, The Who, The Decemberists, Flogging Molly, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Nirvanna, Green Day, CCR, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, Once More with Feeling (Buffy's musical episode), Sweeny Todd, Les Miserables, many others that I hear on my Pandora radio stations based on these, and various other specific songs from artists whose body of work I don't necessarily care for but have one or two pieces I like.  And again my list got ridiculous--I just keep thinking of more people/bands I like.

I've added the more "done" versions of the color and the black and white.  I didn't really like the original background for the color so I scrapped it and went a different route.

Thanks for the feedback so far.  The style/medium of the BW is by far easier for me so I don't feel like I'm a good judge of which is better--the one that I felt pretty confident of what I was doing or the one that took longer and made me stretch my limits.

I'd like some feedback if possible.
I'm working on two versions of an original character.  Neither are quite done yet (no highlights or shadows on the color and no background on the black and white) but I'd like to know what people think.  I'll update the post as I complete them (...if I complete them...).
Thanks for the help.

I've deleted some of my earlier stuff to make room for new ideas so I don't have as many as I used to but there are a few in my gallery.  (I also have many where most of the image is internal maker but I used a few stencils or a pattern from one of the pattern packs to make it.  I also tend to use the background packs now because it uses less space in my assets--I like making interesting dress ups so I really can't keep many non-dress up related assets in there.)

I think this one is all dragon maker pieces:

This is dragon and basic shapes (which are not maker specific but are available to everyone from the beginning)--and reminds me that EveoftheTardis' instruments were probably all basic shapes too.  I think those were what inspired me to make this:

This is a horse maker background with female fashion, male fashion, and animal maker characters:

A horse maker background with basic shape pyramids and classic monster maker characters:

A classic castle asset with a classic dragon:

I also did a set of paper dolls (three female and three male) that would have consisted of only maker pieces and basic shapes...and possibly a few hoard pieces but these were very early images so there wouldn't be much in the way of hoard stuff.  Here is one example from that set (I am particularly fond of the muffin pan which is made from poof sleeves from the first shirt, the band at the bottom of those same sleeves, buttons from one of the jeans, and the second basic shape in the drop down menu.):

!
I haven't been in the forums for a while and I just happen to look through some of the newly approved posts and here is one of my pictures!  Thanks for picking him!
I wish I had a good story to go with him but the people he comes from are pretty reclusive and don't let me know very much about them.  They rarely even come into the sidelines of other stories I have that are based in the same world.

(I like the tall him too, but the original idea of his people is that they are the reality behind the myth of the yeti.  Yeti were once described to me as being small with huge feet so these people had to be small with heavily soled boots or snowshoes.)

Or you could just pretend that all unicorns are shapeshifters...which is pretty much what I do.  I feel like I've read or heard a handful of stories where unicorns can take human form.  Being magic they can probably be just about anything they feel like being.
This is my human form unicorn:

He's a healer.  (Please ignore the misshapen bed.  I was trying to make it look like the patient's body was poofing up the covers but I think it mostly just ended up looking odd.)

Maybe you could make a Christmas card...
A tree display might be neat too--like how department stores will have multiple trees decorated differently to display the ornaments that are for sale.
Or maybe make some Christmas ornament, angels, or other decorations out of non-Christmasy maker pieces (like skulls or dragon horns)...I might have to try this one, it sound fun and challenging.
